One of the major problems faced by the Vazhachal-Athirappilly Eco-tourism area is the burgeoning heaps of plastic refuse from the visitors. This environmental crisis forced the department to give awareness against plastic. The step is being taken on the basis of a feature 'Kattile Kola' published in Mathrubhumi weekened, on the hazardous effects posed by the plastic waste littered by the tourist which was causing danger to the wild animals. Vazhachal division started a venture named ‘plastic free vazhachal’. The increase in the no. of visitors has some undesirable results like the increase in the quantity of plastic refuse. The department has slapped a complete ban in the use of plastic in the area, carrying of plastic bags has been banned. The visitors are encouraged to use paper bag in place of plastic bags. Each vehicle would be checked at the ticket counter at the gate and Vazhachal check post. Those found violating the ban will be fined Rs.2000/- a buy back scheme for plastic bottle has also been introduced. A verification system for plastic material carried by the tourists is a recent move by the department for protecting the environment. Every vehicle will be checked at Vazhachal and Malakappara check post and the details will be entered in a verification slip. The vehicles will be rechecked at the exit point and entry points. And the slips will be verified to ensure that nothing is left behind the forest. Defaulters will be fined a sum of Rs.2000/-. Daily waged VSS members are engaging for the collection plastic refuse. Vazhachal FDA sanctioned grand to the adjacent division Chalakudy for engaging watchers for collection Plastic waste. Nature club of Athirappilly is also collecting plastic waste from households in the name 'Plastic free Village'. The collected materials are carried to the plastic segregation unit at Athirappilly, where degradable and non-degradable materials get segregated and cleaned. Each year large heaps of plastic will be sold on tender basis..
