In the Vazhachal area where families belonging to ‘Kadar’, ‘malaya’ tribes live, the literacy rates are very low. Social initiative was taken by the forest officials of Vazhachal forest division has set up a tribal library at vazhachal named as AKSHARA SREE ‘GRAMEENA VAYANASHALA ‘ which aims to transform the place into hub of learning. The library is helpful to 9 tribal hamlets and forest staffs. More than 3000 books have flowed into the library as contributions from various educational institutions, organizations, environmentalists and public people. The forest department secured financial assistance from Vazhachal FDA, to set up the library and got recognition form district library council. During the lock down period an initiative named as ‘AKSHARAVANDI’ which is a library on wheels with a collection over 3000 books keeps the spirit of reading alive in the 9 tribal settlements in the division. The distribution of books is relatively easy in some hamlets that are lying adjacent to each other. In some cases the vehicle has to tread through tough forest terrain to reach the readers. Different kinds of competitions are organized by the library for the children during the lock down period to escape boredom.
